Bistrot Paul Bert Pepper Steak

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

I have returned! I KNOW! You’ve missed me, haven’t you?

I had every intention of getting my mom to help me make Vanilla Éclairs while I was in California, but we were far too busy shopping (for baby things – not for me, but my little sister is pregnant! Whoo hoo!) and drinking huge margaritas while floating in the pool. So you can see how éclairs fell down the priority list. (And I didn’t get to go to the Coachella Music Festival, either. Boo!)

Garlicky Crumb-Coated Broccoli

Friday, April 8th, 2011

Finally I’m posting on French Friday again! And I know I’ve missed a recipe – I’ve spent most of the day editing photos and writing blog posts I’ve been meaning to catch up on, but I didn’t get a chance to make the Quinoa, Fruit & Nut Salad. Which sounds delicious and I will make it, I promise.

So tonight, feeling guilty about not going to the gym, Jon & I decided to take our little ragamuffin dog, Tucker, for a walk up to the local organic grocery store which, I’m awfully ashamed to admit, I’ve never been to before. But they had the loveliest broccoli, so I squired it home and voilà! Garlicky Crumb-Coated Broccoli for dinner!

This is Tucker Plumb, a 4 year old Bichon-Frise/Poodle cross. He’s our baby.

Birthday Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcakes

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

A few weeks ago,  a good friend invited Jon & I over for dinner, failing to mention at the time that one of the nights she gave us as an option to come was her birthday! I only found out on Facebook a few days prior to the evening, and vowed that I would make her a birthday cake because I think, like Deb at Smitten Kitchen, no one should have a store-bought cake – or worse, NO cake! – on their birthday! And then she very generously agreed to come with me to a nightclub late on a Sunday night to help me scope out this photography competition I’d entered and needed to do some reconnaissance on what I’d gotten myself into. So she definitely earned a cake FOR SURE. It’s the least I could have done.

Scallops with Caramel-Orange Sauce

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

I’m not a really huge fan of seafood. There, I said it.

I’m getting better about it – I’ve grown to love mussels, clams and oysters beyond the salmon-and-shrimp staples. And I do truly love sushi. But lobster and scallops have never really appealed to me. I can’t remember the last time I tried a lobster. Oh, yes I can – I made a face and could barely swallow. So scallops have been kind of a ‘meh’ item for me since childhood.

Salted Butter Breakups

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Ha! You thought I’d forgotten or bailed on French Fridays, didn’t you? Nosiree!

I had such grand plans for this big cookie. My two sisters, their husbands and my mom came out for a visit and I made Dorie’s Short Ribs in Red Wine and Port, and I totally prepared ahead of time and made David Lebovitz’ Salted Butter Caramel ice cream for dessert. And my plan was to make the Salted Butter Breakups to go along with the ice cream, so we could all sit around the table and break off the cookie pieces and dunk them in our ice cream. Isn’t that a fabulous idea?
