Short Ribs in Red Wine and Port

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Yup, you read that right. And yes, it IS as good as it sounds. When it came to voting for this month’s recipes on French Fridays with Dorie, I didn’t even have to read the recipe before voting for this one. Is anyone sick of me saying, “It’s DELICIOUS!” yet? I’m trying to think of another way to put it, but it just WAS plain delicious!

I live very close to a really cool area in Toronto called Bloor West Village. When I first moved here in 1999, I moved in with my sister who had an apartment near the Village and we spent loads of time at the green grocers, cafés, bookshops and boutiques on this charming little section of Bloor Street. When we started cooking together, we discovered the Bloor Meat Market – a small little butcher shop with gorgeous cuts of meat on display and don’t forget to take a number when you get in the door!

Orange-Almond Tart

Friday, February 11th, 2011

I am not normally a fan of orange baked in a dessert – I’m more of a peel-n-eat kind of girl when it comes to oranges. And this is why doing French Fridays with Dorie has totally opened my eyes to new flavours and different experiences: the orange-almond combination of the tart was so…playful on my tongue, I couldn’t get enough! I considered using pears instead, but then decided to not be such a baby and try the oranges. And I’m so glad I did.

Basque Potato Tortilla

Friday, February 11th, 2011

I’m sometimes crap about following directions. I know, hard to believe, right? So it’s no wonder I missed the post on French Fridays with Dorie informing us of the schedule for this month’s recipes. And as a result, I made the Orange Almond Tart instead of the Basque Potato Tortilla first. Realizing my mistake, I ended up making the tortilla for dinner later the same week and then blogging about neither of them last week, and I’m only getting to them both this week on Friday. Slacker!

My New Favourite Salad

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

I got to go out with two of my favourite people in Toronto on Saturday night for a long-overdue girls’ night out and we had an absolute blast! We went to Grazie, one of my favourite restaurants in the the ‘Young & Eligible’ district (that’s the Yonge & Eglington cross streets/subway stop) and I totally fell in love. With a salad.
